Job Summary
Teaching Assistants are in Primary classrooms primarily to support the academic success and social-emotional development of students. This can take many formats and is different from class to class. While Assistants are always under the supervision of teachers to best meet the unique needs of students, we look upon the adults in each room as a teaching team.
Learning and teaching
- Assist in the educational and social development of pupils under the direction and guidance of the Class Teacher, Deputy Principal, and Principal.
- Assist children in all areas of the curriculum allowing the children to learn by doing, exploring, and experimenting with activities. Provide support for groups or individual students inside and outside the classroom to enable them to fully participate in specific activities.
- Establish positive relationships with pupils. Motivate pupils to be enthusiastic and listen to their concerns whilst providing relevant support for emotional or behavioural difficulties.
- Support students who have learning needs or for whom English is a second language. Assist in the implementation of Individual Education Programmes for relevant students.
- Monitor and evaluate pupils’ responses to learning activities through observations and planned recording schemes providing regular feedback to the teacher on student progress or concerns.
- Meet with the teacher on a regular basis to discuss learning activities, future plans and share observations of students/programmes.
- Accompany students to specialist classes and provide support if necessary.
- Help with discipline both inside and outside the classroom.
- Actively participate in learning about the school’s written curriculum and approach to teaching and learning.
Learning Community
- Support the aims and ethos of the school.
- Set a good example in terms of dress, punctuality, and attendance.
- Undertake professional duties that may be reasonably assigned by the Principal/Deputy Principal.
- Be proactive in matters relating to health and safety.
- Be flexible to ever-changing activities and expectations.
- Maintain confidentiality about students.
Professional development - administrative 20%
- Prepare and present displays of students' work.
- Assist with the preparation of the learning environment and the development of support materials.
- Assist students and teachers in cleaning up after projects/activities.
- Support class teachers in photocopying and other administrative tasks.
- Participate in playground, cafeteria, and bus duty as assigned.
- Undertake other duties from time to time as the Principal/Deputy Principal requires.
- Participate in training and other learning activities offered by the school.
- Assist class teachers with maintaining student records – filing work, and assisting with portfolios.
